Zakynthos
The capital of Zakynthos
Zakynthos, Zante, Zacinto or simply Chora - those are all the names of the capital of Zakynthos, located in the easternmost part of the island, often called the Venice of the South for its architecture. Probably the most significant figure that came from this beautiful island was the poet and the author of the national anthem Dionysios Solomos in honour of whom a monument with his statue was built on a local square. The town landmark is the port with a modern marina (Strata Marina) and the lookout of Bochali with a Venetian fortress (1646) with a splendid panoramic view on the whole town.
Zakynthos culture
The town is also a cultural centre - you will find tere several museums like the Solomos Museum with a collection of the manuscripts of this significant figure, located on the Platia Ayiou Markou Square, the Zakynthos Museum with a collection of local artifacts, and the Museum of Byzantine Art that can be found on the Solomos Square. Another interesting exhibition is the collection of icons placed in the St. Dionysius Church.
Today’s Zakynthos
Today´s Zakynthos is a modern metropolis with all the modern conveniences. You will find there plenty of cafés, bars, shops (including those with luxury clothing brands) but also a small market near the port.
