About 20 km south of the capital of Kerkyra, you will find two seaside resorts located one next to another - Messonghi, and Moraitika about 1 km further, separated by the river Messonghi. The resort of the same name which has developed, like most resorts on Corfu, from a small fishing village, is a famous place of holiday relaxation and offers everything necessary for thousands of its visitors. The whole area is dotted with olive groves that are said to be the most beautiful and at the same time the oldest on the island. The crystal clear sea is tempting for different water pleasures and the local hills covered with rich green vegetation create a picturesque holiday atmosphere.
The main beach in Messonghi is clean, with a sand and pebble surface, sloping gently into the sea. It lies away from busy roads and so it is calm and peaceful. Water there is mostly calm and crystal clear, therefore perfect for children and fans of water sports. If you last on the beach till the evening or you go there for a romantic evening walk, there are impressive sunsets and a bizarre view on a huge glaring moon at night waiting for you. During the day, you can see up to the Greek and Albanian coast on the opposite side. To savour all those natural beauties in all comfort, there are umbrellas and deckchairs on the beach, as well as showers and changing cubicles. Along the beach, you will find a few snack bars where you can buy refreshment and ice-cold drinks. If you are longing for a bit of excitement, search for the local offer of water sports, including paddling boats, paragliding, diving, etc.
Messonghi is an ideal place for a family holiday, since it offers plenty of fun both the smallest but also for older children. In the place there is a children´s club organizing various games and activities, as well as children´s swimming pools but also climbing frames, trampolines and swings. There are discos for children being organized regularly, as well as parties with the famous cartoon characters, and much more. And if you want to take a bit of rest from your offspring, you will certainly appreciate the local babysitting services.
What to do in Messonghi?
Yet Messonghi is not by far only a place for families. Although the local nightlife is not so bustling, there are still enough places to dance all night long enjoying tasty drinks. Another advantage of the Messonghi resort is that it is located only within 15 minutes walking distance from another resort, Moraitika, which is more lively and so offers more possibilities of night entertainment. Messonghi is not visited only by parents with their children and couples willing to have some rest, but also people travelling for work and business. Especially the businessmen can combine the pleasant with the useful - one of the local hotel complexes has built a modern conference hall in its premises, used by companies to organize their training courses and meetings. In Messonghi, you can also go shopping, and in the local supermarket, you will find everything you might need and there are souvenir shops to buy gifts for your friends and family.
Trips in the surroundings
Since Messonghi is located near the resort of Moraitika, the trip to the latter almost suggests itself. You can get there walking or use a local taxi. In Moraitika, there are plenty of options to go shopping and have some fun. Those who like hiking will be delighted by the local routes that will take you to adorable traditional villages (e.g. Hlomós located at high altitude with its narrow streets and the view on the surrounding islands). In the interior about 20 km from Messonghi, there stretches the Korrission Lake with salt water. Along the green coast in the south, you will arrive at a small fishing village of Boukari. On your way, you will encounter many nice tavernas where you can stop to take a rest and feast your eyes on the sea. Near Boukari, you can also visit the village of Nótos with vineyards and olive trees where you will see with your own eyes how the local live, untouched by tourism. Also the nearby town of Argirádes has its charm and is worth visiting. To make a longer trip, you can go to the island capital of Kerkyra and see the local ancient historic sites.
